We can print again … on Windows in Chrome

Posted by David Wagner on Dec 18, 2015 10:03:45 AM

If you don’t use Wixie in Chrome on Windows, or your classroom has gone green and you don’t do a lot of printing, then you haven’t seen anything out of the ordinary. But, if you tried to print from Wixie on Windows in Chrome sometime in the last week then you probably noticed all you got was a big grey box.

Last week, depending on when you get your Chrome updates, an update Google released for Chrome on Windows broke our ability to print. Yesterday we released a Wixie update that fixes the issue. Today, everyone should be able to print normally.

Coming from a traditional software background, I do love this aspect of Wixie. If there is a problem, we can fix it and all of our users have the fix immediately, whether they knew they had the problem or not. In the days of installing software on PCs, the OS changes and breaks something we do. We release an update and post it to our web site. Users notice the issue, download the update and install it on all of their computers. In big districts the timeline looked more like:

 - OS update is released
 - During the summer the OS is deployed to computers
 - At the beginning of the school year users report the issue to IT
 - During Winter break our update is installed

Wixie lets us provide a level of support that we just could never do with the traditional software tools. While in a perfect world things would never break, at least in the real world we can try to get things fixed as quickly as possible.

I apologize for the inconvenience. I realize it was terrible timing as people were trying to print holiday cards and projects right before the Winter break.

Enjoy your holidays and Happy New Year!
