The Awesomeness of Wixie and QR Codes

Have you ever showcased your students' work in a space outside of your classroom? Silly question, right? Of course you have. The first place that comes to mind is the walls in the hallway or maybe a display case in the school's entryway. Students often feel a sense of pride or importance when what they have created is showcased and we, the teachers, feel good about displaying it.

So, how does this work in Wixie? Although there are many electronic options, I like to kick it old school sometimes and do a print option. But not the silly old, print and post -- maybe have the students color it if you only have a black/white printer. (Please NO!) Instead, how about printing and displaying QR codes that, when scanned, open the students' Wixie projects? To clarify, the QR code does not open a Wixie account, just a 'viewer' to see/watch the project.

A sample shared with me involves QR code displays in a library that link to student-created book reviews. So while students are searching for their next book to read they could use a device to scan a code that opens a persuasive video -- a book trailer. The QR code has been embedded on images of the students pretending to hold the coded box. Talk about brilliant! I see it as the perfect way to promote reading both for students creating reviews and for students, possibly reluctant readers, choosing a book. And that is just the tip of the iceberg!

I can see this process used for showcases summative projects from famous people, to art projects, to science reports. And this is not a simple 'check me out' image. These projects involve voice recordings explaining the project, capturing their reflection, or maybe justifying an action. Something that requires the students to meaningfully share their knowledge and learning experience.

How do you create the QR codes in Wixie? just go to the File menu and select Share. Open the Advanced option and Download or Print the code.
