March kicks off with Read Across America week. Have your students create their own bookmarks in Wixie to celebrate.
Creating bookmarks is fun for students and can be a powerful performance task for comprehension and retelling.
Wixie makes it easy to create bookmarks with a template students can open on their own.
Using the bookmark template in Wixie
To begin, have students log in to their Wixie account.
Have them type "bookmark" in the field at the top of their Wixie home page.
Choose a Bookmark template to get started.
To add text, use the Text tool on the toolbar.
This will add a text box to the page. They simply drag the box to the place they want text and then begin typing.
Students can use the paint tools to create original illustrations for their bookmarks.
Publishing and sharing
It is essential to publish and distribute student work. It motivates students and sends a clear message that the work they are doing is valuable.
Go to the File menu and choose Print.
Once the pages are printed, students can cut out the 2 halves of the bookmark and glue them together. Laminating them will make them stronger as will printing on card stock.
Trade the bookmarks in your classroom or place them in your school or community library to share your love of reading.
Inform and Argue
Depending on the content you ask students to add to their bookmarks, they can also be an authentic product for informative and argument writing. For example, ask students to create and share a bookmark to honor and celebrate a little known woman for Women’s History Month.
You could also have students complete book reviews in the bookmark template to help others choose books they will enjoy.
Happy creating!
